I’m going a little off topic tonight. I blame this on the fact that I made a trip over to a major bookstore chain. Now I hate these places. I love books but hate the overblown prices. Plus, it’s hard to find what you want. Too large.

The truth is, book stores are too tempting to bookworms and the big chains know it.

Forcing myself to leave after an hour and not spending my last penny, is a real challenge.

But my last visit was a real treat. I had a gift certificate and hadn’t been there since I couldn’t remember when.  Bringing Mom was a big mistake. She’s no longer a reader and was ready to split after ten minutes.

Who can find a book in 10 minutes? I can’t! Now, I can find 12 books in 10 minutes. But usually I don’t have the funds to buy 12 books. These decisions are difficult.

Fortunately, I was able to chose two books:  Writer’s Market 2008 and Writer’s Digest’s Handbook of Magazine Writing.

My excuse for hoarding books is that I never met a good writer who also doesn’t love to read! I love to do both and maybe someday my four ton bookcase will prove valuable if a nearby dam breaks.

Writer’s Market is a necessity for anyone who wants to submit work as a freelancer.  Not only does it tell you, who’s looking for what, but it also includes addresses, how and in what form to submit and word length. Everything you need to know to get your stuff submitted properly.

Except the patience! Something I still have to work on.  Outside of newspapers, I’ve been published in a few magazines. I’ve never really had the time to try it again.

For Christmas break I will have two weeks available from school.  It will take me that long to pick a topic!

An improvement, I’d say! I’m making a real effort to write more frequently.

Ok, so I’m Portuguese and was happy to cover three Portuguese “festas” (parties or festivals).  Met some great people. Ate some great sopas!

Last week I went to an event at the library. A Muslim group was going around giving talks to help people learn what it means to be a Muslim.   Very interesting.  Met more wonderful folks. Ate more great stuff…this time cookies!

This week I’m writing on the big festitivity that originated in  India, Divali or Diwali.  A celebration that marks the opening of a new year.

My manager editor assigned me to do the Divali story. She, like me is interested in other cultures. Some people are not. I don’t get that.

As long as I keep getting “culture” stories, I’ll do them happily because unfortunately, vacations or travel are not in my near future.

Next time, I will post recipes for celebrating Divali.
